Some things to look at
Installation View of Mark Wyse's show at Wallspace
This is the show I spoke about during the crit, Mark Wyse at Wallspace in New York. Note the different kinds of images (including non-photographic images) that get incorporated into his work.
This is interesting as well. The performance artist Marina Ambramović is currently performing a work at MoMA in which for all hours the museum is open, for the duration of her show she sits at a table in silence, and museum guests can sit across from her and stare. This is a blog of pictures of the people that cried while they participated. See them here. You can also see a live feed of the piece here (during museum hours).
And while I am posting here are some photography shows in Los Angeles:
Catherine Opie at Regen Projects
Aurelien Froment & Ryan Gander at Khastoo (actually a video show, but worth seeing closes May 1)
Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili at Eighth Veil
Roy Arden at Richard Telles (he is the guy who made the video with all the internet images and funny music we watched in class)
Uta Barth at 1301PE (this opens May 1st)
Andreas Gursky at Gagosian (He sells his work for the most $$$ of any photographer)

The current state of professional photographers
This New York Times article relates to some of the things we talked about in class relating to the devaluation of photography.
3/23/10
Barbara Kruger "Untitled (I shop therefore I am)" 1987
Sarah Charlesworth "Unidentified Man, Ankara, Turkey" 1987
The first reading for Assignment #3 is called Glossolaia. It is a short collection of quotes put together by two artists, Sarah Charlesworth & Barbara Kruger. Read the article here and print out a copy and bring it to class for discussion. Also please choose one quote you are especially interested in, confused by, intrigued by, etc. and be ready to discuss it.
